Can You Hang Curtains Inside The Window Frame?

Yes. In general, hanging curtain brackets above and outside the window molding looks best because it allows the fabric to fall gracefully. If you don’t want to cover up your detailed window frames, an inside mount (hanging curtains within the frame, as you would with a tension rod) can work.

The key is to make sure there’s clearance so that the curtain doesn’t make contact with the frame molding. If your window has a raised frame, there should be enough clearance if you’re hanging from the header. However, if your window is standard-sized, you may need to make some changes.

Depending on the width of your window and the thickness of your curtain rod coverings, you may have to move the brackets inward to avoid contact with the frame molding. Sometimes angling them slightly from the horizontal will help. However, if you’re hanging from a header, you will typically want to mount the brackets above the opening and not in the window frame.

You should also make sure that your curtain rods don’t touch the outside of the window frame. If they do, there’s a good chance that your curtain rods will warp and possibly break. The same goes for making sure that your curtains are free of any obstructions in order to prevent any snags or tears.

You might also consider simply cutting a piece of thin wood and mounting it to the inside of your window frame itself. This will provide more support to the curtain rod, yet still, allow you to see out through the window.

Hanging curtains or drapes with a rod takes up less space and can be used for many different types of windows. If you are hanging curtains on a regular window, consider using a rod in place of an actual roller blind. This allows you to change the length of your curtains, making them look more as if they were hung using an actual roller blind.
