What Canal Lining is & Advantages of Canal Lining

Canal lining is the process of reducing seepage and  loss of irrigation water by adding a layer,  an impermeable layer to the edges of the water trench. It is know that water seepage can result in losses of 30-50% of water meant for irrigation from water canals.

Canal Linings are provided in canals to resist the flow of water through its bed and sides. Therefore adding canal lining can  prevent this loss and make irrigation systems more efficient.

Advantages of Canal Lining

  • Canal Linings reduces the loss of water due to seepage and hence efficiency is enhanced.
  • Canal linings controls the water logging and therefore the bad effects of water-logging are eliminated.
  • The Linings will provide a smooth surface which increases velocity of  water flow can be increased.
  • This increased water velocity eliminates the possibility of silting in the canal bed.
  • Due to the increased water velocity, the evaporation loss is significantly reduced.
  • Due to the increased water velocity, the discharge capacity of a canal is therefore increased.
  • Canal lining eliminates the effect of scouring in the canal beds.
  • Canal Linings prevents the sub-soil salt to come in contact with the canal water.
  • Canal Lining provides the stable section of the canal.
  • Canal Lining controls the growth of weeds along the canal sides and bed.
  • It reduces the requirements of land width for the canal, because smaller section of the canal can be used to produce greater discharge.
  • Water Canal Lining reduces the maintenance cost for the canals.
