How Do You Hang A Ceiling Fan On A Concrete Ceiling?
Ceiling fans are an inexpensive way to keep an area comfortably cool while saving money on your energy costs. The installation process might be more difficult in areas where the ceiling is built of concrete.
Most weekend handymen do not drill and anchor into concrete on a regular basis. While this work will most certainly involve talents you do not currently possess, there is no reason why it cannot be performed successfully. Here’s how to mount a ceiling fan on a concrete ceiling:
Step 1: Check The Components.
Examine the parts that came with your fan. Most kits will include some type of mounting bracket for installing the fan between two ceiling joists.
These brackets will be useless for this installation. You must find the bracket that is generally fastened to the electrical junction box in the ceiling. This will now be your primary fan mounting bracket.
Step 2. Measurement.
Make a mark for the ceiling fan’s placement. Take precise measurements and ensure that the fan is in the desired location. As a guide, use the mounting bracket.
Placing the bracket against the ceiling, indicating the placement of each hole.
You may have a choice of two or four holes depending on the bracket. Drill all four for increased holding force.
Step 3. Make Holes.
Using the masonry bit, drill the holes. Use the appropriate size bit for the screws you’ve ordered. When drilling, you should wear eye protection and, because you will be drilling overhead, you may want to consider wearing a dust mask to protect yourself from falling cement dust.
Step 4: Attach The Plastic.
Install the plastic masonry screw hole liners. These liners will expand when you screw them in, providing a highly secure fit.
Mount the bracket once the liners have been installed, making sure that each screw is snug and secure.
Step 5: Wire The Swag Together.
Connect the ceiling fan motor to the swag kit. To make all electrical connections, follow the instructions that come with the ceiling fan.
Check that all wire connections are secure and that no naked wires are visible. Connect the swag wire to the fan’s motor casing but do not connect it yet.
Step 6: Install The Fan.
Mount the fan to the bracket according to the instructions that came with it. Each fan kit will be somewhat different, so be sure to carefully follow the instructions. Route the swag wiring from the fan to a neighboring wall, then down to a power outlet. Connect the power cord and test the fan for appropriate operation.
How Do I Smooth A Concrete Ceiling?
Looking to add a touch of elegance to your home décor, but don’t know how to smooth a concrete ceiling?
If you’re looking to give your concrete ceiling a smooth, finished look, here are a few tips to help you out:
- First, sand away any compound that isn’t perfectly feather-edged to the ceiling. A flashlight and a pair of stilts would help a lot. Prime the ceiling. Then apply a skim coat of compound with a 14″ flat trowel (not a drywall trowel). Lightly sand and follow with primer again.
- If your ceiling is stained or has other imperfections, you’ll need to take care of them prior to finishing the surface. Use a drywall knife to carefully remove any compound that’s stuck to the stain or blemish, then apply a new coat of primer to the entire ceiling.
- If you’d like to add a bit of detail to your finished ceiling, consider using a stencil or paint. Be sure to test any new techniques in a small area first to make sure they’re compatible with the concrete surface.
- Finally, seal your finished ceiling with a coat of paint or a sealant to protect it from the elements.
