The drip edge is commonly installed at the juncture of the roof and wall. The metal flashing that prevents water from seeping into the house should be installed directly above the lower roof, as given below;
- Attach the eave drip edge to the sheathing using nails. This involves inserting the nail in the hole made by the screw and then driving it through the sheathing.
- Add an inch to either end of the drip edge. Place the second nail on the lower edge at a 45-degree angle to the first nail.
- Apply roofing felt. Roof felt provides additional protection by stopping leaks, water damage, and rotting of the fascia board. It also provides a good surface to which the drip edge can be fastened.
- Attach the rake drip edge to the felt. This is done by driving the nail head into the felt with a slightly overlapping drip edge.
- Place a nail every 12″ or fewer. This is the general rule, but if the surface is rough, use every 6″ or fewer to avoid snags.
- The rake’s drip edge overlaps the eave’s drip edge, in which the nails should parallel the long wood grain. Drip edges are generally placed on the wall’s sheathing, but some shed builders also prefer placing them into a foam board.
- Bend the corners of the eave drip edge beneath the rake edge. This helps prevent water migrations from one area of the roof to another.
What Fasteners Should You Use To Attach Galvanized Steel Drip Edge To A Roof?
A 1″ galvanized roofing nails or 3/4″ external screws are recommended. The fasteners should be roughly 12 inches apart.
Overlap two flashing pieces by at least 1-inch end to end, with the fasteners parallel to the long grain of the flashing.
