How Do You Install Exterior Window Trim On Vinyl Siding?
Installing exterior window trim on vinyl siding is a relatively simple process, but it can be a bit tricky to get it just right. Here are a few tips to help you get the job done right:
- Start by measuring the trim length and height that you need.
You’ll need to account for the height of the window frame, as well as the thickness of the vinyl siding. Mark the siding, then cut the trim to length. Next, you will need to measure and mark 3-inch foam insulation on all sides of the trim. This is so that your new trim will be inset slightly into the wall to give your window a bit of depth and dimension
2. Use painter’s tape to mark the trim length and height on the vinyl siding.
Then, use a seam ripper to remove the vinyl siding in the desired area. This is a messy process, so wear gloves and goggles to protect yourself. You may also want to wear a particulate respirator mask. Use the right exterior caulk to seal the area where the material is removed.
Make sure that you get all of the edges nice and clean and smooth before you wipe up any excess caulk. Let this dry for at least three hours before proceeding to the next step. Start installing the trim by nailing it in place with a nail gun (if possible).
3. Install the trim using a quarter-inch drill bit and a screwdriver.
Make sure to use a wood screw to avoid damaging the vinyl siding. Drive the screw through the trim for each of the four corner holes. Apply silicone caulk around the bottom of the trim to create a seal.
Cut vinyl siding to length with a utility knife, then secure it to the wall with 3-inch screws in each corner. Install any additional window trim that you may need and apply vinyl caulk to all joints and seams.
- Paint the trim with an exterior paint of your choice.
Be sure to use a primer and paint of the same color as the vinyl siding. Use a roller to evenly cover all of the trim with paint using long motions. Finish off by removing excess paint dust with a disposable shop vacuum, then wipe down your trim with a dry cloth to remove any remaining dust.
Put on some rubber gloves if the vinyl siding is still tacky and apply more vinyl caulk where necessary. Cover the window jamb with vinyl siding and use the same corner mounting technique as before.
5. Reattach the vinyl siding using screws and a drill bit that is the same size as the screws used to install the trim.
This technique ensures that you get a smooth, flat finish that is really clean. Now, you can install any decorative window sill or stop molding that you need and paint these as well.
6. On the south-facing side of the house, make sure to install sun control devices such as shutters or awnings to maximize your energy efficiency and protect yourself from excessive heat gain in the summer months.
