How Do You Paint A Skoolie Roof?

Elastomeric paint was used to paint the skoolie roof.

1. First, clean the roof.

Cleaning the roof took longer than we had anticipated! Most individuals who do this have access to flowing water and clean their roofs with a hose or, better yet, a pressure washer. We didn’t have running water, which was unfortunate.

2. Step 2: Taping the Line between the Roof and the Exterior Walls.

This step is just as simple as it seems. Using our aluminum ladder, we taped off the line between the yellow sides and the white top around the bus.

3. Step 3: Paint the Edges Twice.

We chose to paint the edge of the roof from the ground rather than risk potentially dangerous tilting from above. We painted the first coat, and then a week and a half later, owing to weather concerns, I painted the second coat on it.

If the weather is expected to be consistently warm and sunny, the second coat can normally be applied two hours after the first.

4. Step 4: Paint the top twice.

Emmett painted the initial coat on the rest of the roof while climbing up through an exit hatch. I painted coat two on the roof a week and a half later. This stage might be tough since you don’t want to back yourself into a roof corner.

Not just that, but the area around the last escape hatch via which you exit. (as seen below) must be painted. This requires some maneuvering.

5. Step 5: Paint the seams for the third time.

The coatings were dry two hours after I finished coat number two on the roof. We had plenty of elastomeric paint left over, so I opted to apply a third layer only along the bus’s seams.

As the saying goes, redundancy breeds resilience. I believed more waterproofing at the seams would be the most beneficial.

How Long Does It Take To Paint A Roof?

Generally speaking, a roof painting project will take 2-3 days to complete, but this is not always the case.

The time it takes to paint a roof can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the size of the roof, the type of paint being used, the weather conditions, and the experience of the roof painters.

For example, the project may take longer if the roof is very large or if the weather conditions are not ideal. It is important to realize that a roof paint job is not completed once the coatings are dry. A final brush-over of the surface must be done to bring out the full potential of the colors.
