How Do You Repair A Water-Damaged MDF Window Sill?

  1. Before removing your damaged window sill, you need to check it for any leaks and make sure that the wood is free from water damage. If in case the wood dries out or becomes brittle once it is exposed to water, then you will have to replace it because there may be structural damage that cannot be repaired.

If a leak happens when the wood has already dried out, then the possibilities of finding an opening where the water entered the frame are reduced.

  1. The first step in repairing a water-damaged MDF window sill is by cleaning off excess dirt and dust particles inside and outside of the window frame, especially if you are trying to deal with a large amount of soiled debris such as leaves or tree branches.
  2. After you have completed the cleaning process, then you can easily begin repairing any damaged areas of your window sill. You can use either a router bit or a saw to remove the damaged sections of your window sill. You can also opt to stain the area that has been removed for a better appearance.
  3. After removing the damaged section, you will be required to apply pressure on either side of the cut area by using either wooden or metal blocks cut from 2x4s or other lumber. You may also find it easier to simply use some sort of strengthening glue on both sides of the cut surfaces after they have been cleaned and dried off before applying pressure with these blocks on top of them.
  4. After the glue has dried for about five to ten minutes, you will be required to fold the two sides of your window sill together in order to make a better seal. You can then repeat the same steps by applying pressure on both sides of the section entirely and gluing it down with a heavy amount of pressure.
  5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other side of your damaged window sill, and then you should be able to complete your repairs for a longer period of time before any more water fills up inside your window frame.
  6. Make sure that there are no leaks after you have completed your repairs, and then repeat steps 1 through 6 until you complete the process for the other side of your window frame.
  7. Once you have completed these procedures, then you will be required to cover both sides of all sections with a layer of wax in order to seal the repairs and make them more durable.
  8. After you have finished all of the steps from step 8, then you will be required to prepare a larger area by using steel wool in order to apply the thermal paste over the entire area in which broken wood has been repaired.
  9. Paint the entire area with a primer coat before allowing it to dry for about twenty minutes. You will be then required to paint the entire surface using different colors of paint such as white, black, or other colors.
  10. After you have completed the painting process for your window sill, then you should be able to clean off any excess dust particles and debris from the surface of your window frame itself.
  11. Once you have completed all of these steps, then you should be able to install your new window sill easily by making sure that there are no side gaps in between each section on all sides of your existing frame while securing it with a few screws along its entire perimeter.
