Bend the shingle over the transition and attach it to the roof’s upper part. Brush shingle adhesive behind the bent tabs to fix them across the transition. Hold the bent shingle against the lower roof for a few seconds, allowing the glue to take hold.
How Do You Frame A Gambrel Roof?
A gambrel roof requires the builder to design a succession of separate trusses with similar dimensions. Begin by purchasing 24 rafters. Mark both ends of the boards with a pencil at a 22.5-degree angle.
Then, cut along the lines you’ve drawn with a circle or miter saw, making sure to cut every third board in a perfect triangle shape.
Two triangular rafters are placed on top of each other, side by side. Just like the roof, they should be angled at a 22.5-degree angle. This way, you should have four total triangular rafters with tails that reach on both sides of the roof slope and connect with the ridge cap on top.
Next, cross-tie the rafters and nail them to the ridge cap at 4 feet apart. Nail these nails about halfway through each core for stability and reinforcement. Then, hang braces or truss ridge straps to the rafters for additional stability.
You may also add plywood gussets to reinforce the roof structure. To do so, place 1-inch-thick plywood on top of your ridge straps and nail it down. This will provide continued support for your gambrel roof trusses.
A gambrel roof is difficult to build if you don’t take care of its design and construction. Hiring a professional could be a better option for you if you’re not experienced in doing so or aren’t willing to invest the time and energy required.
