How Much Should A Concrete Patio Slope Away From The House?

When planning a concrete patio, it’s important to consider the slope of the patio and how it will be used.

A sloping patio is a perfect solution for people who want to enjoy the outdoors but also want to keep their patio area from flooding during a rainstorm.

The proper slope for a concrete patio depends on the type of patio and the environment in which it will be used.

A patio should slope 1/8″ (3 mm) each running foot away from the house. A 4″ (100 mm) thick slab put 2″ (50mm) above ground level is usually sufficient.

Begin the excavation, planning, and form building where the patio meets the house to ensure that the height and slope are correct.

Openings in the patio can be constructed for tree wells, flower beds, and the like by constructing forms of the appropriate size and leveling them with the perimeter forms.

For simple screeding, anchor the forms inside and cut the stakes flush with the top edge.

The forms will function as a barrier when the concrete is poured, preventing the concrete from pouring into the aperture.

What Are The Problems With A Concrete House?

Despite the advantages of constructing concrete block homes, there are some issues to be aware of while building concrete block houses.

Spalling

A concrete block house is not entirely made of concrete blocks. A poured concrete tie beam runs around the top of the walls, as do concrete columns or poured block cells from the tie beam down to the foundation slab.

The concrete is strengthened with steel bars that will corrode if exposed to dampness. Rust causes the steel bars to expand, resulting in large fissures on the surface, as shown in the photo above.

If the wall is not fixed, portions of it will fall out, as shown in the photo above.

To avoid this problem and a costly repair, maintain the walls tightly sealed and fix any minor cracking as soon as it emerges.

Termites

Concrete block homes in Florida are frequently assumed to be termite-free. But they exist, and the way many older block homes are built makes them more prone to unseen termite infestation until substantial damage has been done.

Efflorescence

These powdery elevated lines or patches in a block wall are created by moisture collection in the wall, which leaves a mineral deposit on the surface when it evaporates.

It, like spalling, indicates that water is entering through the wall. Although it is mostly an aesthetic issue, water in the wall might cause difficulties at the inner surface over time.

Cracking Due To Minor Settlement

A wood frame home with vinyl, wood, or cementitious siding can withstand slight structural movement without breaking.

On the other hand, a stucco-finished block wall develops hairline fissures with only slight settling and must be fixed to avoid future difficulties.

What Is A Foam Concrete House?

Foam concrete is a form of light concrete that has been blended with unique chemicals to give it exceptional properties.

By far the most durable concrete dwellings, insulated concrete homes are built using insulating concrete foam (IFC), constructed of highly dense plastic foam, and filled with concrete and steel reinforcement.

IFCs, when filled with material, provide a highly insulated, airtight thermal sandwich capable of withstanding fire and powerful winds.

Steel reinforcement in IFCs is buried in concrete to protect it from corrosion and rust. Plastic foams, on the other hand, are coated with flame retardants to keep them from burning in the event of a fire. This material mix results in an incredibly durable structure.

Insulated concrete houses are an excellent choice for residences in colder climates since the technology used to construct them provides optimal insulation with exterior and inner layers.
