How Much Wider Should Grommet Curtains Be Than The Window?

Curtain panels should have a combined width that is 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window/rod to appear ample when closed. That is, if you are ordering Grommet or Rod-pocket drapery, the total drapery width should be at least twice the width of the window/rod.

In other words, for a 36″ window you need at least 72″ (2 x 36 or 2.5 x 36) of fabric to make sure the drapes look ample when closed. You can always order extra fabric to make the panels wider than 2-2.5 times the width of the window/rod if your windows are particularly wide or you want to add extra fullness to the panels.

The length of grommet-top curtains should be equal to or 5″ more than the inside height measurement from floor to ceiling, plus any desired fullness for pleats, ruffles, etc., accounting for some overhang at each end that is used for graceful gathering and proper stacking on a curtain rod.

Grommet-top curtains can be measured across the top edge which is the widest part of the grommet. If you are using a 60″ wide grommet, for example, then for curtains that are 96″ wide (5″ total overhang on each side), you need curtains measuring at least 108″, or 2-times 96″.

The number of panels you need for your window greatly depends on the total width of the window. If you want to hang two curtains, choose a set that is twice as wide as your window. If you want to hang three curtains, choose a set that is three times as wide as your window.

In addition, you should size the curtain rod to accommodate the total width of your window, since you will be hanging three curtains.

What Are Small Window Curtains Called?

A valance is a short curtain that comes in a variety of shapes and styles. It’s often used to cover the tops of windows in tight spaces where full-length curtains are impractical. Some valances are flat, but most have a hem that extends up about 2″.

The hem can be drapery looped under the edge of the window to keep the valance from touching the window pane.

A small window curtain is also called a valance or a drapery panel. Small window curtains can be made from thin cotton fabrics or heavy nylon, and are available in many different colors and patterns. They are often used as room dividers.

The long curtain panels should be at least 36″ wide. They should measure 35″ to 42″ extra long so that they fit snuggly on the window. The rods that hold the curtains open can be purchased separately at your local hardware store or home improvement center.
