Curbs and gutters are simple to design but difficult to build. A curb is a small concrete wall, typically 6 inches high, that serves as a barrier between a yard and a street.

A gutter is a flat concrete slab that runs beside the curb and drains water away from the yard.

Step 1. Excavation.

Excavate the space for the curb and gutter to a 1-foot depth using a shovel or mechanical excavator to provide for a 5 or 6-inch gravel foundation and a 6-inch layer of concrete.

Tamp the soil firmly with a hand tamper or machine compactor before laying down and compacting the gravel base. The base must be the width of the curb and gutter combined, which is normally around 18 inches.

Step 2: Form Construction.

Build the forms out of 2-by-12 boards for the rear of the curb and 2-by-6 boards for the front of the curb and gutter edge.

Place the planks on their edges and fix them with wood pegs pounded into the ground with a hammer behind them. To prevent concrete from clinging to form boards, coat them with cooking oil or a similar substance. Using cloths, apply sealant.

Step 3. Installation Of The Board.

Install a 2-by-6 board at the height of the back curb form, 6 inches above the top of the gutter, to complete the curb form.

Put wood or metal spacers every 6 feet, treated with oil so they don’t stick to the concrete, to keep the front and rear boards 6 inches apart.

Fasten the two boards together with metal clamps or 1-by-2 boards nailed across the tops of the curb form boards every foot to hold the spacers in place.

You’re making a box with an open bottom and a top joined by clamps or boards. Make certain that all form boards are plumb and level.

Step 4. Pouring The Concrete.

Pour concrete into the forms using a wheelbarrow or the spout of a concrete truck, firmly tamping it into all portions of the form using a board.

Pour the concrete level with the form’s top on the gutter side. Fill the curb forms all the way to the top. Remove the front curb board and smooth the curb and gutter surfaces with a trowel and special concrete finishing tools that shape the curb edges after the concrete has been set.

Use a finishing tool to produce indentations in the gutter where spacers were inserted in the curb form to create expansion joints. Remove the spacers and replace them with concrete mortar. After the concrete has fully hardened, remove the front gutter and back curb boards.

What Should Be The Range Of A Slump In Concrete Used For Curb And Gutter?

The air content should be between 5.5 and 8.0 percent, the slump should be no more than 3 inches, and the compressive strength should be at least 3,500 psi. When it comes to slump, it’s important to keep it as low as possible.
