No. Casing and trim are two terms you’ll hear a lot when remodeling your home. While some people use the terms interchangeably, this is not always the case. Trim is more general, whereas casing is only used around door and window openings.
While trim is usually found on the walls of your home and may be used to cover any gaps, the casing is only used around door and window openings. Trim is also often found on the corners of doors, windows, and fireplaces, whereas casing does not necessarily follow those boundaries.
The casing is typically made from wood pieces that are either mitered together or stacked under a cornice-like molding. The cornice molding creates a flat surface where the ends of the wood pieces meet and allows light to pass through between them.
The casing can also be made from metal or plastic, but it’s always used around doors and windows to provide an aesthetically pleasing transition between the glass pane and door/window opening.
The door and window trim is not the same thing. Door trim refers to the material that’s used to decorate the edges of a door, either inside or outside the door itself.
