What Are The Steps To Installing A Metal Roof?
Most metal roofing manufacturers recommend the following steps for installing metal roofing.
Step 1 — Measure the Roof, and Measure Again
Measure the length and width of the roof. Measure those if you need to cover additional structures with your new roofs, such as a detached garage or storage shed.
Step 2 — Remove Existing Roofing and Make Necessary Repairs
Remove the old roof in sections, and remove any chimney flashing. Repair any rotted wood.
Step 3 — Install the Drip Edge.
The drip edge is the piece of trim that runs along the low-traffic areas of the roof. It needs to be installed at this point because it needs to be square.
The drip edge acts as a kind of guardrail for a portion of the roof and can be made of metal, wood, or other materials that will not dent, rot or break.
Step 4 — Install Your Metal Panels or Shingles.
Measure the length and width of each piece of metal or shingles with a tape measure. Place the metal or shingles on the roof and mark where they will be installed. Generally, 24 inches is good but check with your contractor to ensure you are using the correct size.
Step 5 — Place the Ridge Caps and Gutters.
There are a lot of different ridge cap and gutter combinations. However, they all have one thing in common; they are made with plastic to protect the copper gutters from dents and dings. They are also designed to give you a clean, finished look.
Step 6 — Install Your Ventilators
Ventilators can be installed any time after the metal panels are in place but before the caulk is applied because it may be used as an air intake for your HVAC system.
For example, some plumbers install one high-suction vent for each vent stack that goes on the roof with a return that allows for exhaust ventilation of the system.
What Can I Put On My Metal Roof To Stop Leaks?
Gun caulking sealant and butyl tape are the two most prevalent forms of sealant for metal roofs. Gun caulking sealant is the oldest, most traditional, and safest. It works by creating a thick seal of material where it meets with the metal roof, preventing any leaks.
Butyl tape is a more modern type of sealant that provides various benefits. It is easier to apply because it can be cut with a knife or scissors, making it much easier to install on irregularly shaped objects like vents and chimneys.
It may also last longer because it is usually thinner than gun caulking, meaning there is less chance of it drying out or becoming brittle.
