What Size Should Exterior Window Trim Be?
Trim all windows on both sides and across the top. The trim must be at least 3.5″ wide and 34″ thick. The sill must be at least 1.5″ thick, clearly defined, and extended outward beyond the apron to provide visual definition. The top of the trim must be at least 3.5″ wide and 34″ above the finished floor level.
The bottom of the trim must be at least 1.5′ above the finished floor level, clearly defined, and extended outward beyond the apron to provide visual definition.
The top of the sill must be no more than 2″ below the finished floor level and no less than 1 3/4″ above the finished floor level, clearly delineated and extended to provide visual definition at all corners, edges, or ends.
The sill material foundation must not extend below the finish floor level of more than 3 1/2″. Foundation may include wood or concrete with the minimum thickness required for strength.
In addition to the exterior dimensions, the following dimensions must be provided:
- The area of the window between the sills and apron that is less than 1/4″ (1/4″ for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) wide and more than 1/3 ” (for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) high. For non-curved windows, this area can be less than 1/16 ” (for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) wide and more than 2″ high;
- The area of the window between the sills and apron that is less than 1/2 ” (for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) wide and more than 1/3″ (for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) high. For non-curved windows, this area can be less than 3/8″ (for aluminum curves on aluminum or galvanized steel extrusions) wide and more than 2″ high
- The area of the window between the sills and apron that is less than 1 ” wide and more than 2″ high. For non-curved windows, this area can be less than 1/16 ” wide and more than 1″ high;
- The area of the window between the sills and apron that is more than 4″ wide and at least 4 1/2″ high. The bottom of the trim must be at least 3 1/2 ” above the finished floor level in all directions, clearly delineated and extended to provide visual definition at all corners, edges, or ends.
