What Is the Staircase?

staircase is a series of steps(flights), with a landing at appropriate intervals that lead from one floor to another. The staircase provides access to the various floors of the building by ascending and descending from one floor of the building to another.

The staircase consists of a series of steps, and each step consists of a tread and a riser. The tread is the flat area that you step on. The riser is the vertical (up and down) part between each tread in the stairway.

What Is Dog-Legged Staircase?

Dog legged staircase is the most common and economic staircase. It is the simplest type of staircases in which a flight of stairs ascends to a half-landing before turning 180 degrees and continuing upwards. It is also called dog legged stairs because of its appearance in sectional elevation.

Dog legged staircase is generally provided where space is less or limited resulting in economical utilization of available space. In this type of staircase, landing is provided corresponding to the level at which the direction of the flight changes.

It is very common in residential homes and public buildings.

As the name suggests, handrails provide support to hold with the hands of the users.

Standard Requirements of a good Staircase: –

Any well-designed staircase should meet the standard requirement to serve its purpose well.

Location of the stairs

Stairs should be located where there are sufficient ventilation and light and easy access from all or main rooms.

Length of flight

The flight of the stairs should have more than three risers and at most than 16 risers.

Pitch of stair

Stairs are pitched (Angle of staircase) from 15 -55 degrees. It is, however, recommended that the angle should fall between 25 to 40 degrees.

Staircase Landing

The staircase landing width should not be less than the width of the stair flight in any case.

Step Proportions

The rise/going of each stair step in 1 flight and other flights and landing between floors should be equal. The rise/going are proportioned to ensure comfortable usage of the stairs.
