How Do You Mount A Door Frame On A Concrete Wall?

Installing a door and frame in a wall is the same regardless of whether the wall is composed of wood, steel studs, or concrete.

Due to the strong, lasting nature of concrete, the equipment and materials necessary for installation in a concrete wall are slightly more heavy-duty than those required in a wood frame.

If you don’t have the essential equipment for the project, you might rent it instead of buying it.

Step 1

Insert the door frame into the opening in the concrete wall. Place a level on the bottom of the frame and verify for levelness.

If it isn’t, raise the bottom of the frame and slip shims beneath it until it is. Stack the shims on top of one another until the frame is level.

Step 2

Remove the frame and secure the shim stack to the floor. If the floor is concrete, use a 3-inch masonry screw to secure the shims.

Drill a pilot hole for the screw using the rotating feature of the hammer drill. Drill one hole through the shim stack.

Too many holes might split the shims, and you only want them to stay in place.

The hammer drill is used the same way as a conventional drill, except it will go deeper into the concrete and through the shims. Then, using a standard drill, drill the masonry screw into the floor.

Step 3

Return the door frame to the aperture and push the hinge side against the surrounding wall. Place a level against the hinge side of the frame to ensure it is plumb.

Otherwise, insert shims between the concrete wall and the frame. Insert the shims behind the uppermost hinge at the top of the door.

Continue stacking shims on each other until the frame’s side and bottom are level. If required, place shims behind the bottom hinge.

Step 4

Attach the frame’s hinge side to the concrete wall. With a normal drill, remove the middle screw from each hinge and drill a pilot hole for longer 4-inch masonry screws that go through the frame and shim into the concrete wall.

Make the hole using a hammer drill, then insert the screw with a standard drill.

Step 5

Screw shims into any gaps at the top and opposite sides of the frame with masonry screws. You will need to remove the middle hinge screws again.

Step 6

Cut all shims flush with the frame using a tiny, fine-toothed saw. This is a perfect time to check your work.
