How Long Do Zinc Roof Strips Last?

Zinc roofing strips will last for five to eight years only. Any strong chemicals will quickly degrade your roof, reducing its service life. The most serious disadvantage of zinc strips is that they are only effective for 5 to 8 years.

After that, you’ll have to take them out and replace them. Sealing your roof before installing roofing strips is a good idea. Zinc roofing is not ideal for attics, as they allow too much moisture to enter the structure.

If you intend to replace your zinc panels, you need to make sure that your attic is dry. Drain out any excess water and leave it dry for four months.

Is Zinc Or Copper Better For Roof Moss?

Copper strips provide greater coverage than zinc strips, which means you will destroy more roof moss.

Neither product is intended to be a “long-term” solution: Installing zinc strips will provide you with 5-8 years of protection, while copper will provide you with a few more.

It all depends on the intensity of your moss growth and the amount of rain you get.

Zinc strips are cheaper than copper, yet they provide almost the same results.

How Do You Install Zinc Strips On A Roof?

Apply Z-STOP zinc strip (50-foot roll) to all roof peaks by butting it against the ridge cap on both sides (see graphic). Apply Z-STOP on anything that prevents rainwater from flowing, such as chimneys, gables, and skylights.

To be effective, rainwater must run over Z-STOP. It should be left on the roof for two complete seasons. Any other treatment will cause galvanic corrosion.

How Much Does It Cost To Install Zinc Strips On A Roof?

Installing zinc strips on a roof costs between $550 and $950, depending on the size of your roof and how many sections you want to insulate (you may do more than one part at a time).

The price may also depend on whether you install the zinc strips yourself or hire a roofing specialist to do the job.

How Effective Are Zinc Strips On Roofs?

When rainwater strikes the zinc strips, it progressively releases zinc particles. This rainwater drains off your roof, preventing moss and other organic buildups. However, research has revealed that zinc strips are only slightly useful and that their benefit fades quickly.
