What Can You Use Instead Of Tiles On A Roof?

Five different options can be used instead of tiles on a roof;

1. Stone-Coated Metal.

Stone-coated metal roofing, also known as stone-coated steel roofing, has a deep architectural profile that resembles asphalt shingles, wood shakes, or clay tiles.

This premium roofing material comes with up to a 50-year warranty and is extremely resistant to wind, hail, and fire. It is comprised of corrosion-resistant metal that has been permanently bonded to crushed granite.

The granite layer is not intended to slough off like the mineral coating on asphalt shingles. Typically, stone-coated metal roofing is laid atop wood strips, or battens, which form air passages between the roof deck and the roofing.

These air holes act as insulation, keeping the roof deck cooler in the summer and preventing ice dams in the winter.

2. Built-Up Roofing.

The most common roofing material used on low-sloped roofs is built-up roofing. Built-up roofing is composed of numerous layers of bitumen surfaces and is completed with an aggregate layer or coating as the top layer. This top layer is often tar, over which gravel is put.

Smooth asphalt (hot or cold) and ballasted asphalt are two types of built-up roofs. Decking, insulation, ply sheets (reinforcing textiles), and one or more surface materials are common components of all varieties.

Asphalt (tar) or other bituminous substance is used to glue the layers together. The surface coating used on the roof can considerably influence its cost and longevity.

Solar shingles are a roofing material that also serves as an alternative to traditional rooftop solar panels.

Unlike earlier generations of solar shingles and other solar roofing products, which employed flexible “thin-film” solar technology, modern solar shingles are often comprised of stiff materials such as tempered glass.

This helps them seem and behave more like traditional shingles, and the majority of them may be put similarly to shingles without professional installation personnel.

4. Single-Ply Roofing.

Single-ply roofing is a common choice for commercial buildings since it can be utilized on any roof pitch. Single-ply roofing is classified into two types: thermoset and thermoplastic.

Thermoset membranes are constructed from layers of synthetic rubber polymers like EPDM, CSPE, and Neoprene. Since of their great size, they are typically utilized for big roof areas because the number of seams is reduced.

5. Standing Seam Roofing.

Standing seam roofing is a metal roofing composed of vertical panels with two seams that stand vertically. They have a more complete look and are more durable than standard corrugated metal roofing. Standing seam roofing materials include galvanized steel, Galvalume, and copper.

Standing seam panels are laid over normal plywood roof decking and a suitable underlayment, such as an ice and water shield. The panels are usually 12 to 24 inches wide and parallel to the roof’s slope.
