What Does Column Base Plate Mean In Construction?

A column base plate is a steel plate placed beneath a column in construction to distribute applied loads to a concrete member.

The plate acts as a cantilever beam fixed at the edges of the column, defined by the geometry of a structural profile.

It is typically welded directly to the columns or fastened by means of bolted or welded lug angles.

Column base plates are designed and detailed to transmit the applied design forces safely to the foundations.

Why Column Base Plate Is Required?

Column base plates are required to spread the compression load from a column to a sufficient area of the footing, preventing overstressing.

The base plate can be welded directly to the columns or fastened by means of bolted or welded lug angles.

Additionally, column base plate design for shear loads can include shear load acting directly on anchor bolts.

Finally, column base plates are provided beneath steel columns in order to transmit the applied design forces safely to the foundations.

How To Install Column Base Plate?

To install a column base plate, the first step is to locate the column line using the centerline of an anchorage template.

Then, an anchorage kit should be installed for each column and placed on a concrete footing.

After that, the anchorage template should be removed and a beam plate should be placed in the location where the column will be installed.

Next, two screws should be screwed into the small portion of the beam plate using a 5/16” hex bit.

The base plate can then be added to the steel column by going to Design tab on the ribbon and selecting Base Plate in Properties window.

Autosize can either be left selected or unselected to manually define the plate size.

Finally, stable base plates should be anchored to the floor via four holes and secured with floor fasteners.

What Are The Benefits Of A Column Base Plate?

The benefits of a column base plate include providing strength to the lower part of the column to maintain a balanced foundation, dealing with a variety of load conditions including compression, shear and rotational moments, spreading the concentrated load over a larger supporting area so that bearing stresses are under acceptable limits, cost-efficiency due to design software being less expensive than other drafting materials, time-saving due to design software not requiring pencils, erasers and rulers, completing the load path into the foundation and providing an economical connection between an HSS column and base plate through fillet welding.

What Are The Types Of Base Plates?

Base plates are steel plates that are used to connect columns to foundations or other structural elements.

There are two main types of base plate connections: column base plates and beam base plates.

Column base plates are rectangular steel plates welded to the bottom of a steel column, while beam base plates are typically square or circular steel plates welded to the top of a beam.

Baseplates can also be used as a building surface for LEGO sets and other construction toys.

When a steel base plate bears on less than the full area of concrete, the nominal bearing strength is multiplied by the lesser of 2 or the ratio of actual bearing area to gross area.

Base plate joints can include several stiffeners, shim plate or shear lug, and all parameters of the connections can be modified.
