A vibratory roller is a compactor that uses combined static and dynamic forces to increase the load-bearing capacity of surfaces such as soil, asphalt, or other materials. It has a drum that densifies the surface by transferring vibrations to it.
The vibratory roller is more efficient than other types of rollers for compaction and usually has a rear-end two-wheel and a front-end drum roller. The vibrations from the roller help to organize the particles and exert direct pressure on specific layers.
When moving in a reverse direction, the vibrations are turned off to prevent disturbing the compaction of already compacted areas. It is particularly effective with cohesionless and granular soils like sand.
How Does A Vibratory Roller Work?
A vibratory roller works by filling a drum with basalt, which rotates and collides with the drum walls to produce vibrations.
The magnitude of these vibrations can be adjusted by altering the weight of the basalt or by using weights attached to a motor shaft inside the drum.
The roller also has wheels for flexibility and vertical movement on uneven surfaces and is controlled by a driver in the main cabin. The engine can be located at either the front or rear of the roller.

These types of soils can be challenging to compact using traditional rollers, but the vibrations produced by a vibratory roller help to rearrange the particles and eliminate air voids, resulting in a more compact surface.
What Is The Speed Of The Vibratory Roller?
The vibratory roller can achieve a maximum frequency of 2,400 vibrations per minute and travel at speeds of around 22 miles per hour while applying a force of 3600 vibrations per minute.
However, operating at these vibration frequencies reduces the speed to around 4 miles per hour. For pneumatic-tire rollers, the maximum speed is 4 miles per hour and can be adjusted based on the frequency of vibrations.
The engineer specifies the operation speed and vibration frequency, and the amount of compaction is monitored through site samples.
Can You Use A Vibratory Roller On Dirt?
Is it appropriate to use a vibratory roller on dirt? According to industry guidelines, a vibratory smooth-drum roller is suitable for materials with a maximum of 10% clay content.
A tamping foot or Padfoot roller may be more effective for soils with higher clay content. The clay content of soil can be determined through laboratory analysis.
