What Is Cement Milling?
Cement milling is the process of grinding together cement clinker, gypsum and other additives to produce a fine grey powder.
The resulting material, called “cement meal”, is then heated in a rotary kiln to around 2,000°F to produce the finished product known as Portland cement, which can be used for many different construction purposes.
Cement milling involves using specialized equipment to break down large chunks of material and grind them into much finer particles that are easier for the manufacturing process.
This may involve using ball mills, hammer mills or vertical roller mills depending on the type of material being milled.
In addition, chemical additives may be incorporated during the milling process in order to achieve desired characteristics such as improved strength or enhanced hydration properties.
How Many Types Of Cement Mills Are There?
There are two types of cement mills typically used in the industry, one is a ball mill and the other is a vertical roller mill.
Ball mills consist of large rotating cylindrical vessels partly filled with steel or ceramic balls which grind material to a certain fineness.
Vertical roller mills use large rollers to grind material through compression between the rollers and a rotating table found in its base.
Both these types of mills can produce different particle size distributions depending on the materials used, operating parameters and operating conditions.
What Happens In Cement Mill?
Cement milling is the process of grinding clinker and other additives to produce a homogenous mixture with the desired physical and chemical properties.
In a cement mill, the clinker, gypsum, and other additives are ground into a fine powder which is then mixed into a slurry surrounded by rotating rollers.
This slurry is discharged through an opening at the bottom of the mill where it is collected in silos or tanks before being sent to a kiln for further processing.
At this stage, water may be added to the mix and any additional substances needed for producing specialized types of cement.
The finished product can then be transferred to storage units where it awaits delivery to its customers.
What Is The Difference Between Raw Mill And Cement Mill?
Raw Mill and Cement Mill are essentially two different processes in a cement plant.
Raw Mill is mainly used to grind raw materials into fine powder, whereas Cement Mill is used for grinding clinker and other additives to form the final cement product.
The main difference between the two lies in their respective input materials; Raw mill mainly accepts raw materials from the kiln whereas Cement Mill mainly accepts pre-crushed material from a separator or pre-blending bin.
In terms of output, Raw mill produces fine powder while Cement Mill produces clinker with minor additions of other ingredients depending on type of cement produced.
