What is the Consistency of Cement?

The consistency of cement paste can be defined as the percentage of water needed for cement paste, at which the viscosity of paste in such a way that it determines the amount of water needed to make a paste.

Any Cement paste requirement of minimum water in cement paste to initiate the chemical reaction. It is necessary to determine consistency because the amount of water affects the setting time of the cement.

The consistency of cement is the minimum water requirement to start the chemical reaction between water and cement

The standard consistency of the cement mixture is the level of water required, where the plunger infiltrates into the cement paste of about 5mm to 7mm from the base of the shape. In other words, the consistency of cement is basically the measure of water required to start a synthetic reaction of water and cement. 

The minimum quantity of water required to start the chemical reaction between water and cement to form a paste is known as the consistency of cement.

Types of cement

Cement is the most important building material for any construction work. The cement should be made of a reputed brand, and the type should be relevant to its intended use.

Types of cement available in the market are:

  • Ordinary Portland Cement, OPC

  • Portland Pozzolana Cement, PPC, and

  • Portland Slag Cement,PSC.

Ordinary Portland cements both 43 grade and 53 grades, can be used in all kinds of general construction works. These are highly recommended in water retaining structures, marine structures see which pipes mass concreting works such as dams, etcetera, substructures in self attic soils and structures in a hot and humid climate.

While buying the cement, it should be checked for its freshness by observing the week, month, and year of manufacturing.

If the cement is more than 90 days old, it should be tested for its compressive strength before using the ISI code mark printed on the bag with license number, type of cement, relevant code number, and the Net quantity assures the consumer that the quality and quantity of the product is adhering to the standards stipulated by bureau standards.
