How Do You Repair A Concrete Door Threshold?
Concrete thresholds are frequently used for indoor and outdoor showers and entry doors to rooms with stone or granite floors.
Normal use and building movement can cause surface chips or hairline fractures. A threshold that is significantly damaged or loose must be replaced.
However, you may fix chips and hairline cracks using special caulking available at home centers and hardware stores. An unattractive threshold will appear brand new in a matter of minutes.
- Wear latex gloves and safety goggles. Using a stiff-bristle cleaning brush, remove dirt and debris from the concrete threshold’s chips and hairline cracks.
- In a plastic bucket, combine 1 quart of water and a reasonable amount of liquid detergent. Remove any remaining dirt and debris from the threshold’s surface using a cloth.
Allow the threshold to dry after rinsing it with a clean towel and fresh water.
- Insert a urethane caulking tube into a caulking gun. Cut a 1/4-inch aperture at the tip of the tube using a utility knife.
- Fill a concrete chip with caulking. Smooth the caulking to a consistent look that merges with the neighbouring surface of the threshold with a steel putty knife. Allow the caulking to cure completely.
Remove any remaining caulking from the threshold’s surface using paint thinner and a cloth.
- Begin at the far end of a hairline crack. Draw the caulking gun along the crack from end to end to apply urethane caulking.
Force the caulking into the crack with the putty knife and smooth it to a uniform look. Allow the caulking to cure to the touch before removing any excess with paint thinner and a cloth.
