What Color Should My Window Shutters Be?
What Color Should My Window Shutters Be?
The most popular shutter colors for any home are black and white. Black shutters add a touch of class to a home. White shutters create a sense of balance and freshness. Having said that, there is still a wide range of shutter colors to choose from (including custom colors).
Many colors have been used over the years; some have become favorites, and not all colors have remained popular. In general, the colors white and black are always popular, but other colors can be more striking than others.
You will also notice that shutter colors are closely related to the facade color of your home’s exterior. For example, a home with a red or orange exterior would likely offer shutter colors that match those tones.
If you want to bring the character of your home’s color scheme into your window shutters, select shutter colors that complement your exterior color scheme.
Keep in mind: Not all shutters are created equal. Some shutter colors will last longer than others. If you are planning on investing in a new shutter, consider choosing one that is:
- Durable.
You can avoid unnecessary painting by choosing a shutter color such as white or black that doesn’t fade easily.
- Attractive.
Find shutters with colors that you can stand year after year, such as tan or brown. Paint color trends change every few years, so if you want a color that will work long-term, choose one of the neutral colors.
- In keeping with the style of your home’s exterior decor and the architecture of your home (such as colonial shutters).
- In keeping with the lifestyle of your family, such as wood shutters for a rustic look.
In addition to your primary shutter color, you can consider adding accents to accentuate your style and personality. The most common accent colors are green, blue and brown, but some people also choose yellow or red.
If you choose a red or yellow accent color, make sure that it is not overpowering; instead it should complement the shutters’ primary color. If you’re looking for something more masculine or feminine in feel, try a shade of blue to add depth and calmness to any room in your house.
How Do You Hang Window Shutters On Vinyl Siding?
- Take measurements of your windows:
Measure the height and width of each window with the shutters in place. Measure from the top of the sill to the bottom of the sash. Measure from side to side across the center of each shutter panel (The shutter panels are not always centered; they often extend farther out on one side than another).
- Double-check the screw length:
Measure the thickness of the siding above and below your windows. Cut screws to length, so they can screw into the just-mentioned thicknesses.
- Drill pilot holes through the shutters:
While holding your shutter in place above the window, drill pilot holes through the bottom of the siding and into the studs (the main vertical support beams in your home).
- Drill holes through the siding:
While holding your shutter in place, drill through the top of the siding and into the studs. The screws can then be used to attach your shutters to the siding.
- Insert spacers:
Spacers can be made from wood or metal and are used to help keep the shutters from banging against the window.
- Install the shutters:
While turning the screws in, insert the spacers into each opening so that they are slightly below the level of the window.
