Why Is My Flat Roof Spongy?

A spongy feel to a flat roof usually indicates significant water ingress into the flat roofing substrate. This is typically caused by insufficient drainage systems and a faulty gutter system due to poor maintenance.

This can also occur when water saturates the granular aggregate layer and seeps in, after which it is continuously re-exposed to direct sunlight. This insulation layer can also be damaged by excavation and backfill, resulting in a more severe condition.

To test for moisture penetration into the flat roofing material, lift a small piece of the air space (e.g., a square foot section of flat roofing panel) with your fingertips touching the material’s surface only at its edges. Place this sample inside an opaque box and then cover it with black tape.

Drop boiling water into this box for 10–15 minutes. This can be done with a 6-liter pot and a water hose. Alternatively, this can be done using steam injection into the roof deck. Once the water has been removed from the sample, re-insert it into the roof structure.

Once inserted, test for any moisture re-absorption through your fingertips in 1 hour. Whether or not moisture has penetrated the material, wet it with boiling water for 10 minutes and then re-test for any moisture absorption in an hour.

Repeat this process until you are sure there is no moisture saturation in this sample (i.e., no measurable moisture absorption).

Why Should You Never Drink In A Pub With A Flat Roof?

Flat-roofed pubs are often disparaged for a perceived lack of character, history, and links to violence. Despite this, they’re still a part of London’s landscape as the rest.

Some of the capital’s best pubs with flat roofs include The Swan (pictured here) in Teddington, The Rose and Crown in Hampton Hill, and the Dolphin in Dagenham.

The landlord at a pub I used to drink at would always say: “If you drink here, you must never drink over the pub.”

That’s because of what happens if you accidentally drop a pint on the floor: it pools along a stretch of the ceiling in an alcove behind the bar, where it hides like water behind an old-fashioned toilet cistern. Sooner or later, someone will put their pint down on that bit and spill it all over themselves.

What Type Of Shingles Do You Put On A Flat Roof?

TPO is a single-ply white membrane used in both commercial and residential roofing. It’s an inexpensive, durable material with various thicknesses, colors, and types. The most common type has a plastic base, which helps keep the roof deck cooler by reflecting more heat and light.

This makes it more energy efficient, as well. When appropriately installed, TPO is resistant to damage from hail and high winds, but some green roof experts say the material can allow moisture to seep through instead of being absorbed by the asphalt.

The benefits of TPO are numerous. Smooth-textured roofs are less likely to trap dust or debris that might otherwise end up on your carpets and furniture.

The material increases storm protection by deflecting intense winter or summer weather down into the terrace below. Because it absorbs small amounts of water, it also helps prevent leaks that cause damage to walls and ceilings.

What Type Of Waterproofing Would You Use On A Flat Concrete Roof?

It is a bituminous waterproofing membrane. It is generally thicker than paint, and the color is black. It should not be confused regarding the application. Varnish paint can’t be used by itself unless it’s a “spray-on” varnish, which washes off in heavy rain.

The membrane will typically have a 10-year warranty as long as all application directions are followed and proper flashing protection is used along with suitable adhesive in all areas.

What Is The U Value Required For A Flat Roof?

The roof must have a U value of 0.13 W/m2K or less. Existing flat roofing insulation – The roof’s U value must be less than 0.18 W/m2K. It is recommended to check the actual U value and compare it with this requirement.

The flat roof above a terrace on which a busy bar serves drinks is completely iced over on Christmas Day. It looks as if someone has put down a layer of pure white snow and then polished it until it shines in the sunlight.

The translucent ice is magical, like a film set, but the warmth of bodies in thick coats and layers is a reminder that this ice is not artificial.
