What is the Bulking of Sand?
Bulking of sand is the phenomenon of an increase in sand volume due to increased moisture content.
Bulking of sand is an important volumetric change that takes place in the sand when they are moist. Sand increase in volume, to the extent of 20-30 percent, when they contain moisture between 2-8 percent.
The increase in sand volume due to an increase in moisture content is known as the bulking of sand. The film of water is created around the sand particles, which forces the particles to get aside from each other and thus increase in volume.
The rise in moisture in sand increases the sand volume. This increase in volume in the dry sand is known as the bulking of sand. The process of bulking of sand will depend on the quantity of moisture in the sand and the particles’ size.
Five to eight percent of the increase in moisture in the sand can increase sand volume up to 20 to 40 percent. Again the finer the sand is more will be the increase in volume, and the increase in volume will be relatively less for coarser sand.
